Xavi visits Generation Amazing programme in India

FIFA World Cup 2022 Qatar, Xavi Hernandez

SC Global Ambassador Xavi Hernandez visited a Generation Amazing site in Mumbai this week to mark the construction of a new community pitch and take part in a game of football with programme participants and youth ambassadors from across India.

In collaboration with Generation Amazing's local partner, Oscar Foundation, the event took place in the presence of H.E. Saif Bin Ali Al Muhanadi, Qatari General Counsel in Mumbai.

"I am very proud to be in India with Generation Amazing to visit the community in Mumbai, to speak to the participants and hear about their experiences," said Xavi, who currently plays for Qatari side Al Sadd.

"It is a very special moment to be able to kick off the construction of a community pitch in this area, which will clearly bring great benefits for those involved in the Generation Amazing programme and in the wider community."

"I'm particularly excited to be able to visit this rapidly developing football nation which has such great potential, and to see for myself the impact which Generation Amazing is having on the ground," the former Barcelona midfielder added.

Generation Amazing is the human and social legacy programme initiated during Qatar's successful bid to host the FIFA World Cup 2022™. It harnesses the power of football to positively impact lives and create sustainable social development in communities.

A total of 28 community pitches have already been built across the Middle East and Asia by Generation Amazing, with the programme reaching more than 250,000 beneficiaries in seven countries.

Generation Amazing aims to positively impact the lives of 1 million youth by 2022, with the goal of providing children and young people from disadvantaged communities with safe spaces to play, enabling football for development programmes to be carried out and achieving a long-term impact on the host communities.

Generation Amazing recently opened two pitches in India, in Rurka Kalan and Nagpur, as it continues to build on the commitment to help develop the social and human legacy of the FIFA World Cup 2022™ across Asia.

Launched by the Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy in 2010, Generation Amazing aims to develop a young generation of community leaders who will create lasting social development in their communities.

Xavi's visit to India follows an earlier visit in 2016 to the Generation Amazing pitch and programme in Jordan.
