AFC Champions League Top Scores over the years

Kuala Lumpur: Goals, as they say, win matches and ever since its revamp in 2002, the AFC Champions League has produced a star-studded list of players who have topped the goalscoring charts in each subsequent edition of Asia’s premier club competition.

2002-2003 Hao Haidong (Dalian Shide)

2005 Mohamed Kallon (Al Ittihad)

Al Ittihad

After claiming their first AFC Champions League title in 2004, Al Ittihad repeated their success a year later thanks in part to the goals of Mohamed Kallon. Having entered the competition at the quarter-final stage, the Jeddah-based club dominated the tournament with a total of 20 goals, six of which, were scored by the Sierra Leone striker.

2012 Ricardo Oliveira (Al Jazira)

Al Jazira

Ricardo Oliveira set a new goalscoring record for the AFC Champions League by netting 12 goals for Al Jazira from the United Arab Emirates during the 2012 season. The Brazilian striker matched the previous landmark of ten goals during the Group Stage, but went on to make history by scoring two more in the Round of 16 defeat to Saudi Arabia’s Al Ahli.

2013 Muriqui (Guangzhou Evergrande)

2014 Asamoah Gyan (Al Ain)

Ghana international Asamoah Gyan played a major role for United Arab Emirates powerhouse Al Ain in 2014, scoring a total of 12 goals - just one shy of Muriqui’s record set the year before. Gyan scored seven goals in the Group Stage and five more en route to the semi-finals where Al Ain lost 4-2 on aggregate to Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal. Gyan went on to be named the 2014 AFC Foreign Player of the Year.
