Al Ahli sign iraqi midfielder Saad Abdul Amir

Jeddah: AFC Champions League 2017 contenders Al Ahli have signed Iraq international Saad Abdul Amir from fellow Saudi side Al Qadisiyah.

Al Ahli

Abdul Amir, who captained Iraq at the Rio 2016 Olympics, started his career with hometown club Al Karkh in 2008 before moving two years later to Arbil, who finished runners-up in the 2012 and 2014 AFC Cups.

After spending five years with the northern Iraqi outfit, the 24-year-old joined Saudi Arabia's Al Qadisiyah, where he played in 38 matches and netted seven times.

The Baghdad-born midfielder helped Iraq remain unbeaten at Rio 2016 thanks to Group Stage draws against hosts and eventual champions Brazil, Denmark and South Africa. He scored a memorable goal against the South Africans in their final group game.

Al Ahli are in Group C of the 2017 AFC Champions League alongside Zobahan of Islamic Republic of Iran, 2016 runners-up Al Ain of the UAE and a Play-off winner, either Qatar’s El Jaish or Uzbek side Bunyodkor, against who the Saudi side will commence their campaign on February 21.
